St. Joseph’s University Professor Barbosa fashion industry views

 Prof. Álvaro Barbosa

Dean of Faculty of Creative Industry

University of Saint Joseph

Question1: What are the considerations of USJ in Fashion Design and the prospects to the Fashion Design industries. What is the reason for USJ to open the Fashion Design Programme?

The field of Creative Industries represents an innovative paradigm for our contemporary knowledge-based society, closely associated with recent trends in cultural activities, digital technologies, and sustainable urban development. The University of Saint Joseph is a leading international university in China’s Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Macau, where the creative and cultural industries are widely acknowledged as a strategic area for the development of a vibrant and pioneering cluster of businesses and entrepreneurs. Created in 2012, the new Faculty of Creative Industries integrates some of the most successful programmes of our university, ranging from the most traditional subsectors of the Creative Industries, such as Design, Architecture and Communication & Media, to new fields of study that increasingly converge in the creative domain, which is the case of Fashion Design, which is inline with the strategic sub-sectors of the Creative industries Development, proposed by the Macau Cultural Institute and the Cultural Industries Fund of the Macau SAR. The New Bachelor Program in Fashion Design is unique within the higher education system of Macau, but above all, the integration with other areas within the same faculty provides a unique multidisciplinary community in which students have access to exceptional education opportunities and a work environment that allows them to extend their abilities to the utmost.

Question 2: How do our curriculum meets the needs of the industries?

The tradition of Macau in garment production is an extremely important landmark in It’s Culture and Heritage. With the advent of the gaming, tourism and entertainment economy, this industry has declined in Macau. However, a shift from the Manufacturing to the Creative Design paradigm presents it self as an opportunity to capitalize on the Macanese textile traditions and know-how. In addition, the existing infrastructure for retail embedded in the casinos, entertainment and touristic attraction represent unexceptional hub for fashion display and commerce, targeting locals and tourists in one of the most international and multicultural environments in Asia, that is increasingly demanding in terms of having high quality and innovative Fashion Design. The development of the curriculum for this program resulted from the efforts of a multidisciplinary team that includes members of the Faculty of Creative Industries (Design, Communication, Architecture), as well as members from other Faculties at USJ (Business and Humanities) and the prestigious Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Macau (CPTTM, that has a long lasting experience in professional fashion design training in Macau. The involvement of these stakeholders provides an effective insight into the local and international context of this industry, resulting in a curriculum adapted to its needs.

Question 3: How do the fashion design in Macau goes beyond the region?

Fashion Design is one of the main drivers in the strategic development of Hong Kong’s economy, with multiple training centers and academic programs associated to a very strong industry. In addition the development of a cosmopolitan lifestyle in the neighbor regions of the Pearl River Delta (particularly in Shenzhen and Zhuhai) has introduced a need for individual expression of the citizens manifested by Fashion. On another hand, USJ and Macau have a long standing tradition of cooperation with Portugal where a new generation of exciting Designers has been inspiring European Fashion and influencing the Macanese Culture. Finally, Fashion Design is a global expanding creative field that benefits from the recent developments in technology, that allow customization and complex designs to be shared and commercialized at the global Level, which represents an extraordinarily opportunity for a small region like Macau.
